 1) What is the purpose of a music video?

To promote and advertise the artist song and allow people to be entertained by the artist. 

2) How has the digital age changed the production and distribution of music videos?

Through YouTube artist are allowed to use YouTube as a source of promoting their own music 

3) Which three major record labels are behind VEVO? What is VEVO and why was it created?

Universal Music Group Sony Music Entertainment and EMI in August 2016 Warner Music Group the world's third-largest record company agreed to license premium videos from its artists to Vev

4) What are the key conventions of a music video?

  • A link between the visuals & lyrics (complement, contradict or amplify)
  • Genre characteristics (heavy metal in industrialised settings; rap music in urban street contexts etc.)
  • Contain intertextual references (references to popular culture)
  • Contain notions of looking (e.g. screens within screens)
  • Include objectification of females (e.g. male gaze)
  • Include demands of the record label (close ups of lead singer, symbols or motifs associated with the band / performer etc.)
  • Video will be performance, narrative or concept based.

5) How can narrative be used in music video? Give an example of a music video that uses a narrative.

It was a good day by Ice cube it uses a narrative and follows a day to day life with the artist Ice cube

6) What examples are provided in the factsheet for intertextuality in music videos?

References may be very obvious, such as the way that the Blink 182 video for All the Small Things makes references to videos by pop artists such as Back Street Boys (I Want it That Way) and Christina Aguilera (Genie in a Bottle) by directly copying scenes.

7) Why do audiences enjoy intertextual references in media products?

They enjoy it because it allows the other fan base to follow and it can allow the audience to feel pleasure when they recognise the reference.

8) Read the music video example analysis on page 3 of the factsheet. Select a music video of your own choice for each of the following headings and explain how each one links to the 
heading:

Conventions (movement/narrative/artist) -  Him dancing moving fanatically There a narrative in the middle when they crashed the car into a ladies house and then the house caught on fire which made the new reporter report it.  

Intertextuality - The scene of the news reporter is a reference to the news anchor  `1


Representation - Dre and Eminem are represented as the unlawful as they committed a crime e.g drinking and driving crashing into a fence post and arson 


Audience - The dance and the movement creates entertainment for the audience along with the dialog in the middle of the song 


9) Watch the video for Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day (1993). How did this video set the conventions for later hip-hop music videos?

It set an urban area with hip hop conventions with low riders bandannas in the urban areas it had police guns  


10) How important do you think music videos are in the marketing and promotion of music artists today? Are music videos still essential to a band or artist's success? You need to form your own opinion here.


Music videos are essential for artist as they promote and provide pleasure for their fans they also allow more people to understand it as some may not understand the lyrics but they might understand through the use of video. It also creates a band image and allows the audience to easily promote it to other people.
