TV assessment learner response

 1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Q2 shows clear potential: knowledge of csp, and key messages. Now you need to add exam technique and depth to this for the higher levels.

EBI: revise postmodernism for Q1 for Q2 you need to intro the ideological element of the question what is the message to the audience?

2) Read the whole mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment (even if you got full marks for the question).

Q1
The increasingly blurred nature of film genres in the contemporary media landscape. Sequels
and parodies often offer intertextual references and audience pleasures linked to
recognition of other films, franchises, genres or stars. Possible theories: Steve Neale –
similarity and difference; Schatz – genres are dynamic and go through cycles. Kingsman: The
Secret Service suggests the parody or deconstruction stages – where genres are
experimented with to establish new or different conventions.

Q2
Capital :
Drama is structured around a London street which is real and a microcosm of society, a style
more readily associated with ideological messages. The narrative relies on a highly constructed enigma of the detective narrative providing audience pleasure but complicating the concept of realism.

Deutschland 83:
Positioning could be evaluated in terms of reception by nation and age which could affect
the way audiences respond to the ideological message.
The postmodern visual aesthetic which draws on pastiche, use of exaggerated popular
culture references and stylized mise en scene, may undermine the claims to realism and
ideological reading.

3) The first question demanded a response using postmodern terminology. Write a definition here of the three main terms:

Bricolage:The juxtaposing of old and new texts, images, ideas and narratives to create new meanings.
Pastiche:This refers to media products that imitate the style of another text, artist or time period. Pastiche is an example of intertextuality and takes a positive view of the original source.

Intertextuality: a concept that refers to the interdependent relationship of texts due to shared or similar aspects, such as themes, images, icons, or narrative structure.

4) Read this exemplar answer for the 25-mark question in the assessment. Select a quote from the essay for each of the following aspects from the mark scheme:

a) analysis of the products that focuses on contexts and ideological positioning- Capital is a state-of-the-nation drama and this genre immediately gives it an urgency and
realism that reflect the political and cultural contexts of its setting.

b) use of media theory -the Daily Mail’s review of capital described it as ‘more packed with left-wing causes than Jeremy Corbyn’s diary’ which suggests a preferred reading that is left-wing and socialist. Indeed, an analysis of characters and representations supports this idea of producers promoting a ‘woke’, left-wing agenda.

c) a judgement or conclusion on the question- It is impossible to ignore the ideological positions constructed by television dramas and Capital and D83 are no exception to this. However, it could be argued that different audiences can read these fictional genres in different ways depending on their own perspectives and therefore social, cultural and political contexts are not the only aspect to this process.

d) examples from the TV CSPs - Bogdan the Eastern European builder is shown
sleeping at work, Quentina insists on working long days illegally because she doesn’t want to take state handouts, even Roger is portrayed in an ‘under-the-armpit’ camera shot on a packed tube train and later working on his laptop in bed.

e) use of media terminology - Applying Gramsci’s theory of
hegemony, this is unconsciously communicating to audiences the value in working hard,
earning money and contributing to consumerism and capitalism - maintaining the status quo and reinforcing more rightwing ideology.

5) Based on this assessment, write three things you need to revise before the upcoming end of Year 12 exams.

postmodern terminology
revise stereotypes
How texts covey a meaning

Mise-en-scene

  1) Find a distinctive   still image   and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson. CLAMPS . Costume Lighting Actor (placement and movement) Make-up Props Setting The Costume suggest that they are all old fashioned and that this is set in the late 1990s as they are all wearing suits or this may suggest that they are at a wedding or a party. The guy in the grey suit may be the main character as he is the only one in a grey suit. The Lighting is more so focused on the person in the grey suit which may show again that they are the main character. The Actor placement is one is standing straight up whilst the other actor is up against the car with his arms wide which may suggest that some conflict is gonna happen or the guy in the brown suit is scared and may try and run. Make-up there isn't that much make-up. There is some props such as the broken camera which may connote meaning that there was conflict just before it brok...
