Statement of intent feedback

 GOHILL, Rishi

Mark: 3

Grade: D

Comments for AQA:

  • The statement of intent clearly offers a video concept that has some thought behind it – locations, shots, mise-en-scene. However, it lacks the ‘how’ or ‘why’ for media language and representation required for the higher levels. It arguably targets the specified audience but needs further justification in terms of the ‘mainstream’ element of audience outlined in brief.
  • Media language elements are considered in places – there is clearly a plan for the music video element. Plan to have visuals matching lyrics is clear but focus on narrative does not go beyond this.
  • Representation is addressed briefly in this statement in terms of reflecting the artist’s upbringing and subverting stereotypes but not really saying ‘how’ or ‘why’ this will be done.
  • Audience is mentioned briefly but without really demonstrating knowledge of media terminology or theory. Lack of focus on brief too.
  • Digital convergence and industry not mentioned – reference to industry contexts and convergence required to move this into higher levels.
  • Print element of brief is left blank in introduction and not referred to later. This is half of the coursework so significantly brings the mark down and reflects the lower level 2 placement.

Feedback:

  • You’ve got a clear idea for a strong video here (although in some places you need to write in the future tense!) What you are lacking is a statement of intent that meets the requirements of the mark scheme.
  • For Media language, you need to explain ‘why’ for everything you mention. Regardless of what you mention, for each element always make sure you are explaining why: What connotations are you trying to create? What will you communicate to the audience?
  • You discuss having visuals reflecting lyrics but don’t really expand on narrative or character beyond this. Look back over the brief as there are certain elements you need to cover.
  • Audience is mentioned very briefly and again I would look back at the brief. Are you sure this project meets the ‘mainstream’ element of the brief? I think it can work but you need to justify it.
  • Representation needs a lot more. There’s an interesting idea in terms of subverting stereotypes of people from certain backgrounds but no detail. How and why will you subvert these stereotypes? Will you reinforce any stereotypes or genre conventions? What theories can you apply here?
  • Print brief is missing completely. We haven’t covered this yet so it’s not a major problem at the moment but you absolutely need it in the final draft. Go back to this in January to add specific details when you have done the print research and planning tasks and make sure it meets the brief.
  • Digital convergence and industry – again completely lacking. Another section that you will need to make sure is there for the final draft.

Next steps:

  • Copy and paste this feedback to your Media 2 coursework blog with the title ‘Statement of Intent feedback and learner response’.
  • As your learner response, pick out the three improvements/changes you need to make to your Statement of Intent before producing a final draft.
  • Re-draft your statement of intent using Microsoft Word / Google Docs – you may wish to do this after Christmas when we have completed research and planning for the print element of the brief.

I need to add more examples and add more explanation on points
I need to build up on my ideas such as talk why i want this setting etc
I need to use media theorist and use their ideas surrounding my artist

Mise-en-scene

  1) Find a distinctive   still image   and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson. CLAMPS . Costume Lighting Actor (placement and movement) Make-up Props Setting The Costume suggest that they are all old fashioned and that this is set in the late 1990s as they are all wearing suits or this may suggest that they are at a wedding or a party. The guy in the grey suit may be the main character as he is the only one in a grey suit. The Lighting is more so focused on the person in the grey suit which may show again that they are the main character. The Actor placement is one is standing straight up whilst the other actor is up against the car with his arms wide which may suggest that some conflict is gonna happen or the guy in the brown suit is scared and may try and run. Make-up there isn't that much make-up. There is some props such as the broken camera which may connote meaning that there was conflict just before it brok...

The British film industry: blog tasks

1 ) Write a one-sentence definition of what makes a film British. Films produced in the united kingdom   2) What is the difference between a Hollywood production context and production context of a British film? Hollywood studios have high budgets, a heavy reliance on celebrities both in the cast and crew and spectacle driven stories. Whereas British films  tend to have low budgets, character rather than spectacle driven stories and a heavier reliance on word of mouth and viral advertising. However  British films can be large budget, high concept films such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 or they can be character driven, small budgeted films such as Kill List 3) When did the James Bond franchise start? In 1962 The Eon series currently has twenty-five films, with the most recent, No Time to Die, released in September 2021 4) In terms of film censorship and graphic content, what began to change in British film in the 1970s a...

capital case study

Read the following review and feature on   Capital : Guardian review by Sam Wollaston London Evening Standard: five things you need to know about  Capital 1) What positive points does the review pick out about  Capital ?  What criticisms are made - either of the TV drama or the original novel? It gives a good representation of London life and shows how peoples lives are and how they struggle day to day basis  2) What references can you find in the reviews and feature to the idea Capital is a 'state-of-the-nation' drama? How does it capture modern-day London? The TV adaptation is set in present day  We may technically be moving out of the recession now, but the bonkers housing market and increasing rate of gentrification across London means that Capital’s ideas still stand. Reflecting the times, the setting has been changed from Clapham (in the 2008 book) to Balham / Tooting (in the 2015 series). Trailer analysis Watch the trailer for  Capital : ...
